What makes Starigrad Paklenica one of the most particular places on the Adriatic coast is that a single day can hold both the beach and the fresh mountain air of Paklenica National Park. This is a short guide to making the most of it.

Trails for beginners and families

Paklenica is not only for experienced hikers. The main trail through the canyon of Velika Paklenica is well kept and suits an easy walk with children. In about an hour and a half you reach the forest hut Lugarnica, where you can stop for tea or coffee beside the stream.

A paradise for climbers

For anyone who loves adrenaline, Paklenica is a legend. Its vertical walls, the best known of which is the 350 metre face of Anića kuk, draw climbers from all over the world. Even if you do not climb, watching them is a sight in itself.

Three things before you go

Shoes. Leave the flip-flops behind. Firm trainers or hiking shoes are a must.

Water. There are springs in the canyon, but carry at least a litre per person.

Time. In summer, start as early as you can, to avoid the strongest sun in the canyon.

After a long day on the mountain there is nothing better than stepping into the pool of your own villa.
