Why Starigrad Paklenica is the Ultimate Spring & Autumn Luxury Escape

In short: Starigrad Paklenica is a quiet coastal village in northern Dalmatia, between the Velebit mountain and the Adriatic, about 40 minutes from Zadar Airport. In spring (April to June) and autumn (September and October) the air is mild, Paklenica National Park is at its best for hiking and climbing, and the coast is calm. Calma Luxury Villas offers two officially five-star villas here, each for up to 8 guests, with a private pool heated from 1 March to 1 November and a jacuzzi, a few steps from the sea.
The season between seasons
In July and August the Adriatic belongs to everyone. In April, May, September and October it belongs to those who know.
The light turns softer. The canyons of Velebit are green in spring and copper in autumn. Restaurants have time for long conversations, and the beach in front of the villa is often yours alone. Days are warm enough for the terrace and cool enough for the mountain.
This is when Starigrad Paklenica is most itself: a village where the mountain touches the sea, and where silence is part of the stay.
Paklenica National Park: the mountain behind the villa
Paklenica National Park begins just behind the village. It has been protected since 1949 and lies within the Velebit biosphere reserve recognised by UNESCO.
Hiking. The park has more than 150 km of marked trails, from gentle walks along the Velika Paklenica canyon to full-day routes towards the highest peaks of Velebit. Spring brings wildflowers and running streams; autumn brings crisp air, clear views and quieter paths. The classic route follows Velika Paklenica towards the Lugarnica forest house and the Paklenica mountain hut. Mala Paklenica, the smaller canyon, is wilder still.
Climbing. Paklenica is the most visited climbing area in Croatia, with hundreds of routes at the entrance to the Velika Paklenica canyon. The main season runs from early spring to late autumn, when the rock is dry and the temperatures are kind. Anića kuk, the park's great limestone wall, draws climbers from across Europe, and every May the International Climbers Meeting fills the canyon with life.
Wellness when the air turns cool
The finest moment of a spring or autumn day at Calma comes after the mountain.
A heated private pool. Both villas have a private pool, heated from 1 March to 1 November. When the sea is still cool in May, or the evenings shorten in October, the pool stays inviting from morning until dusk.
Jacuzzi under the Velebit sky. Each villa has its own jacuzzi on the terrace. Warm water, cool evening air and the outline of Velebit above you: a contrast summer cannot offer.

Sauna at Villa Calma I. Villa Calma I adds a private sauna, a natural ritual after a day in the canyon. Heat, a cool shower, the pool, then the jacuzzi. For a deeper rest, a massage by the pool or a private chef can be arranged on request.
Summer, or spring and autumn?
Air. Summer is hot, often above 30 °C. Spring and autumn are mild, around 14 to 24 °C.
Heated pool. In summer it is a refreshing alternative to the sea. In spring and autumn it becomes the centre of the day.
Jacuzzi and sauna. In summer they are best after sunset. In spring and autumn they are at their best day and night.
Hiking and climbing. In summer, only at dawn or dusk. In spring and autumn, the prime season: mild air, dry rock, green or copper colours.
Crowds. Summer brings busy beaches and roads. Spring and autumn bring a quiet village and beach moments of your own.
Ideal for. Summer suits families and beach holidays. Spring and autumn suit couples, friends, hikers, wellness seekers and those who work remotely.
